The Creative Group - Source for Freelance Advertising Work

June 3rd, 2008 by wordfeeder

I thought I would share a job resource that was a great source of revenue for me when I was doing offsite freelancing five years ago.

(I no longer travel to clients - Wordfeeder.com Copywriting and Marketing operates as a strictly telecommuting freelance enterprise).

When I left my corporate job in 2003, I got my advertising portfolio together and headed to The Creative Group in the hopes that they might help me break into pharmaceutical advertising. The Creative Group is a job placement firm (a subsidiary of Robert Half International) specializing in freelance creative positions such as copywriting, web and graphic design, and proofreading.

In order to land pharma advertising jobs, I had to become familiar with the AMA (American Medical Association) style guide, so I bought their book, studied, and then took a test. I *think* the test was actually administered by another agency, but it worked in my favor because before long I was getting pharma gigs. The Creative Group was one agency who helped me out in that area.

It turns out I didn’t enjoy writing pharmaceutical copy. (It has something to do with my hatred for the entire drug industry but I won’t get into that here.) In any event, at that time Wordfeeder.com was yet to be established, so The Creative Group and a couple of other firms like it proved to be a reliable source of income for me. The experience I gained from working with the small agencies that they put me in touch with was invaluable. It helped me climb out of the retail catalog advertising box that I was stuck in.

I still keep in contact with The Creative Group, although they never do seem to have clients who are willing to work virtually. But I believe that a workstyle revolution is upon us and more and more service providers will be providing work for their clients via telephone, email and fax.

So I keep pointing my website (living portfolio) in the direction of my friends at The Creative Group, and one day I’m sure it will pay off. In the meantime… I’ve got plenty of clients keeping me busy - but it’s good to keep your eggs in a few different baskets.

For now, I thought I’d encourage anyone who works in a freelance advertising capacity to check out the offerings at The Creative Group. Don’t be afraid to put on your interview suit and let them know you’re out there and available with fresh talent.
