Beyond the Resume: Creating a Living Portfolio So the Jobs Find You

Let me guess. You’ve got that nagging feeling that it’s time to update your resume again. You’re thinking that you owe Monster and Hot Jobs and at least a few other people an appearance if you want to keep your head in the employment game.

Well, I want to point out something to you about resumes. This is important stuff for you to consider as the job market changes and the world as we know it turns on its head!

Resumes are OUT, websites are IN. Which is NOT to say that you shouldn’t have a resume… you want to keep all your bases covered. But you should also begin creating your Living Portfolio - even if you’ve never once thought of yourself as a consultant.

If you have a career, that means you’re formally trained in SOMETHING - so start acting like the expert you are, and this WILL be a testament to your qualifications for any job, be it temporary or full time.

This is the direction that the world is heading in! Believe it.

In the last five years, I’ve done 100% of my business via online marketing and networking. NO job sites, NO temp agencies, NO corporate 9 to 5. I work purely as a web consultant. I make good money, knock wood, I make my own hours (okay, so I work a LOT - but at least I DECIDE when and where I’ll be doing my job), and I love what I do. The career I have today is a culmination of everything I’ve ever done professionally, only it’s conducted on MY terms.

Can you guess how many clients of mine initially requested to see my resume in those last five years?

THREE. Yes, three!

“That’s strange,” you wonder. “How is it that a professional copywriter whose clients initially don’t know her from Adam Urbanski does NOT get asked to present her resume before being hired?”

No one asks me for my resume because I have an entire website that showcases my expertise at Wordfeeder.com.

What’s this got to do with you? The times, they are a-changing. Maybe you were recently laid off from your job, or perhaps you’re still employed but losing sleep at night, certain that you’ll be soon pounding the pavement any minute now.

I’m here to tell you - DON’T sit there and wait until they swing the axe. It takes time and tons of effort to market yourself - Brand You - on the internet. Do something great for your career TODAY. Shift your mindset from “finding a job” to “pulling in paid projects.” The difference of course, is that instead of pursuing a company in the hopes that they’ll hire you, you simply build your personal information empire and then wait for people to discover YOU And What You Do. And THAT will give you serious competitive edge over people who have the same qualifications as you do.

Do you advertise on Craigslist.org? If not, start! Create a juicy looking ad, but don’t stop there. HAVE A WEBSITE where people can go to learn more about your qualifications, your services, and to get their questions answered about your realm of expertise.

Do you network on Facebook or Myspace? Don’t stop there, either! You want a website that you can link to which works as your personal sales agent, 24-7.

ALWAYS be marketing Brand YOU!

A website (or lack thereof) is really and truly the deal maker or deal breaker. I know, because I have the opportunity to work with freelance consultants every day. I WANT to see that website before I decide if you’re worth the money! And it had better look and sound damn good, brother!
